EVENTS. Raminta Šerkšnytė Showcased by Toronto New Music Concerts

On April 30 New Music Concerts series in Toronto, led by one of the most renown contemporary flutists, Robert Aitken, features music from the Baltic countries in the evening entitled Baltic Currents. Alongside with Latvian and Estonian composers, the programme includes preludes for piano by M. K. Čiurlionis, the Birds of Eden by Algirdas Martinaitis and two opuses by Raminta Šerkšnytė (b.1975) - Vortex for solo violin and 15 instruments (2004) and a world premiere of her Almond Blossom for 9 instruments commissioned by NMC. Raminta Šerkšnytė, one of the most gifted composers of younger generation, has been also invited as a guest curator of the whole event.

Enticed by the beauty of Van Gogh's Almond Blossom, Raminta Šerkšnytė distanced herself, this time, from the expressive idiom characteristic of her orchestral music. The aroma of the flowering almonds inspired her to write in a lighter, playful way, and her Almond Blossom, shimmering with impressionistic colours, poises between the Oriental simplicity, transparency and the Western concert tradition.
