No. 4 April / September 2002

Is it possible to adapt to the symphony orchestra what turntable masters are able to generate in dance music clubs today? Mindaugas Urbaitis, who writes a new ballet referring to contemporary dance music, comments on his new work. Vidmantas Bartulis has traversed all spheres of musical creativity - manoeuvring between serious and entertainment art, academic and popular culture, sacred music and the theatre of the absurd. His piece String of Beads for the Virgin Mary for voice, mixed choir, and string quartet was chosen one of the most memorable Lithuanian music opuses of 2001. What are Vidmantas Bartulis' sources of inspiration? Osvaldas Balakauskas elucidates his new chamber opera La Lointaine, commissioned by the Warsaw Autumn festival, to be premiered this autumn.
