Lithuanians at MIDEM 2007

For the third year in a row Lithuanian companies continue their mission at MIDEM. This time the Lithuanian national stand (R 33.10) is set up by the new formation, Music Export Lithuania, thanks to support from the Lithuanian Ministry of Culture, the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and the LATGA-A.

Music Export Lithuania is launched

Music Export Lithuania, a new project of the Lithuanian Music Information and Publishing Centre, was formed in July 2006 with an aim to support the integration of the domestic music industry into the international music market, and to assist in promoting Lithuanian artists and their work abroad. This new undertaking has been carried out in association with the Agency of Lithuanian Copyright Protection Association (LATGA-A). Among the project’s main objectives are the maintenance of close contacts between all relevant parties in the Lithuanian music industry, the concept development and implementation of various promotional projects, sales initiatives and showcases.

Daiva Parulskienė, head of the new formation, says, “The project was born out of a growing understanding that more cooperative action is needed in our country to market and sell Lithuanian music abroad. And I am glad to receive a positive response from the side of music industry. There is an ambition kindling among our companies to internationalize their activity, and we want to support that by all possible means. MIDEM is an excellent place to introduce our new effort.”

Music Export Lithuania has also developed a powerful data bank on Lithuanian music and artists and launched it online just recently, in January 2007. The MXL data bank is a unique information tool, which not only represents diverse music scenes in Lithuania, but also introduces every genre in the most appropriate framework. Here you can search for artists, works and their availability (contemporary / classical), releases, full discographies (jazz artists), publications, videos, promotional photos, and, of course, music. Designed for professional users, www.mxl.lt should also bring a lot of fun and pleasure for every music lover, eager to discover less known music. The MXL data bank will be also introduced at MIDEM 2007.

Lithuanian companies at MIDEM

This year the number of Lithuanian participants at MIDEM National stand comes to 10 companies, all of them intended to promote their services and musical productions.

Melodija is putting forward one of the most sought-after Lithuanian acts, Skamp, as well as a devotee of Scandinavian melancholy-drenched pop, Amberlife. Among the MIDEM newcomers are one of Lithuania’s largest concert promoters, Effectus, and two companies – Megarsa and Slapjack – from Kaunas, second largest Lithuanian city. Returning to MIDEM this year is Bomba, one of the most hardworking distributors in Lithuania. Bomba distributes a number of majors as well as independent and budget music companies. The BOD Group – the largest CD and DVD manufacturer in the Baltics, which has launched advanced DVD production lines in Lithuania and Estonia – continues to build its Nordic profile at MIDEM.

The side of classical music and jazz is represented by the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society, the largest state concert agency promoting their own events and artists, and stylish classical and jazz music label Semplice.

New Publications

This year at MIDEM the Music Export Lithuania will introduce the series of promotional releases – genre-specific promotional CDs and DVDs, designed to bring more Lithuanian artists to the attention of the international music industry. The first two releases (out of five in total) aim to introduce Lithuanian pop/rock acts as well as rising electronic music scene in Lithuania (DJs and live acts).
