Feliksas Bajoras' Music in the Naxos Catalogues [Classical / Contemporary]

Before Christmas Naxos released the first CD with Feliksas Bajoras' music, this time dedicated to his music for strings. At the core of Bajoras' music lies composer's interest in the expressive potential of the melody, the meaning of a musical phrase, dialogue between melodies. Almost each of his works bears a programmatic title and develops a certain theme, capturing the composer's vision. Fully aware of twentieth-century musical trends abroad, Bajoras absorbs these into his musical language, essentially continuing the neo-romantic tradition.

A retrospective release includes Bajoras' Symphony No. 2 Stalactites (1970) for string orchestra, which reflects his experiences on a visit to the former Czechoslovakia, and Ženklas (The Sign, 1996) for strings, percussion and voice, which sets a poem by Mindaugas Tomonis, whose death in the Soviet period it commemorates. Suite of Verbs (1966) is one of the Bajoras early works, typical of his anti-romantic agenda at the time and short powerful Bartokian Prelude and Toccata (1967) remains a hit piece in repertoire of every Lithuanian string orchestra.

The CD has been recorded by the St. Christopher Chamber Orchestras under Donatas Katkus. The recording of the CD has been supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania.
