Programme note

For me, timbral characteristics and technical possibilities of instruments often become a key to a new composition, to its character and musical language. The saxophone, an instrument especially rich in sound expression, inspired the contrasting moods of the Concerto, and, being a jazz instrument, naturally added some elements of jazz to the idiom of this work, such as swinging rhythms, progressions of the seventh chords, and virtuoso cadenzas.
