Raminta Šerkšnytė
Mirage

Year of Composition:  2003
Duration:  10
Instrumentation:  gui

Movements:

I Molto rubato

II Allegro molto

Programme note

'Mirage' is an optical phenomenon having to do with illusionary images. In this piece, I wanted to create an illusion of a misleading visual perception, when the view keeps continually transforming and becoming more and more phantasmagoric when one approaces an object in sight.

To convey this strange 'illusionary image' in music I tried to use supposedly alien and unreal sounds, like bends, vibrato, glissandi, knocknig, etc., which at the same time are quite idiomatic for the guitar.

The dramaturgy of the piece is based on the growing tension and continuos transformations of initial motifs, textures, and playing techniques.
