Poetry will be riding the bus in Brussels, opera will resound through BOZAR and interactive exhibitions will come to the Institutions. This is a just a glimpse of what the cultural programme of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council has to offer.
Starting this month and running until December, ‘cuLTure’, the Lithuanian Presidency’s cultural programme could not be more diverse. It ranges from classical music, poetry, literature and book art to contemporary audiovisual installations, poetic documentaries, auteur films, contemporary theatre, and visual arts.
The highlighted letters ‘LT’ (Lithuania) in ‘cuLTure’ express the importance of culture in everyday life in this Baltic country. As explained to Commission en direct by Gabija Žukauskienė, Deputy Cultural Attaché at the Lithuanian Representation: “The programme reveals the very essence of artistic creativity in Lithuania – a mixture of poetical worldview and intellectual provocation, self-reflection and response to the world’s beat, playfulness and preoccupation with historical memory, simplicity and refinement.”
In an effort to meet the expectations of the international and local audience, the programme has been put together in partnership with some of Belgium’s major cultural institutions – BOZAR, Flagey, Ghent Museum of Fine Arts, the CINEMATEK, and the KlaraFestival and Flanders Festival.
An opera diva and two masters of cinema
The musical events, focused on internationally acclaimed and upcoming young artists, are scheduled to kick off in September with a Gala Concert by the opera star Violeta Urmana. A worldrenowned soprano, Urmana will participate in the KlaraFestival accompanied by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. Modestas Pitrėnas, another prominent figure in the Lithuanian musical scene, will be conducting the concert. For those not able to go to BOZAR on 12 September, the recital will be broadcasted via radio.klara.be.

Towards the end of the Presidency, Flagey’s Studio 4 will present the Ąžuoliukas Boys and Youth Choir, active since 1959, on 15 December and a musical and video art performance created by the young composer
Juste Janulyte on 18 December.
However, not just Brussels audiences will be treated to classical musicians from Lithuania. This year’s edition of the Ghent Festival of Flanders will play host to concert pianist Petras Geniušas, the Čiurlionis String Quartet. Ghent will also be the host city of an exhibition on the work of the painter and composer Mikolajus Konstantinas Čiurlionis. ‘Dreaming Lithuania’, which will run from September to December at Ghent’s Museum of Fine Arts, will comprise more than one hundred paintings, drawings and photographs of the artist.
Moving on to cinema, there will be the opportunity to explore the works of two acclaimed filmmakers – Jonas Mekas and Šarūnas Bartas. A Mekas retrospective will be presented by the CINEMATEK and BOZAR CINEMA on 16-30 October in the Cinémathčque royale de Belgique and the Bartas retrospective will be presented in Flagey’s Studio 5 cinema in the second half of November. Mekas, who is connected to the Fluxus art movement, will be in Brussels in October for a conversation with Lithuania’s first President, MEP Vytautas Landsbergis. This chat will open an exhibition about Mekas life which will run from October in BOZAR. One part of the display provides an overview of Mekas’ creative endeavours with films, photos, poems, installations and a video diary. Another part, entitled ‘The Fluxus Wall’ consists of objects by the Fluxus art movement.
The renowed stage director Oskaras Koršunovas is also coming to Brussels, bringing with him his unorthodox interpretation of Hamlet. “Our Elsinore is a make-up room, which slowly turns into the Kingdom of Denmark,” explains the director.
Music, cinema and theatre are on the menu, but poetry will clearly not be forgotten. On 26 September, the young poet Agnė Žagrakalytė will participate in a poetry evening at the International House of Literature. Furthermore, her verses, along with works by other European poets, will be displayed in Brussels trains and buses. Poetry will be on the move, so that everyone can enjoy it.
Lithuanian culture at the Institutions
Last but not least, the sounds and colours of Lithuanian culture will also be on display inside the EU Institutions. Several exhibitions will be organised during the Presidency, including ‘Lithuania in the Mail Parcel’. Basically, this show consists of ten boxes, each of them containing items registered as UNESCO natural and cultural heritage. Inside these boxes you can find recordings of music, videos of dance, historical instruments for land measurement or even a children’s game.
Gabija Žukauskienė sees the EU Council Presidency as an opportunity to let Europe know more about Lithuanian culture and hopes that this cultural programme “will open the doors for future professional exchanges between Lithuanian and European artists, curators, culture managers and institutions”.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAMME OF MUSIC EVENTS
JULY – DECEMBER 2013
JULY 2013
Kremerata Baltica Concert
1 July | Großer Saal des Rotes Rathaus, Berlin (DE)
Programme
In 1997, the renowned violinist Gidon Kremer came up with a brilliant idea: the three Baltic countries, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, should have a joint chamber orchestra! The three ministries of culture supported the idea with rare enthusiasm, but no one could have anticipated the success the orchestra would achieve, including a Grammy award. Kremer himself makes a point of supporting his young musicians, of whom about half are still studying and the rest are beginning their professional careers, by playing with them and providing various types of financial support. But what you will enjoy most is their repertoire, which is already well known for its unexpected juxtapositions.

Martynas Levickis and the Band
Martynas Levickis became a household name in Lithuania when he won the ‘Lithuania’s Got Talent’ television show in 2010. But he’s a serious musician: the same year, he also won the Coupe Mondiale. Since he studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London is his second home, and he’s played on many of its prestigious stages. What does he play? Anything, from Beethoven to Lady Gaga. If you love him as much as we do, and we promise you will, you’ll be happy to know that his new album is also out in July from Decca Classics.

Lukas Geniušas was recognised as a concert pianist when he was only 15 years old. But he was never resigned to being a prodigy. He is constantly developing his personal performance style, and finding exciting musical partnerships to deepen his interests and abilities. He appears here together with the Čiurlionis Quartet, one of Lithuania’s best string quartets. Of course, they will play music by Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis, the wonderful romantic Lithuanian composer, as well as pieces by Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin.

Having been around since 1968, albeit with some changes in its membership, the Čiurlionis Quartet is one of the oldest quartets in Lithuania. From the very beginning, it has clearly stated its preference in its repertoire for works by Lithuanian composers, and stuck to it. In concerts in Tallinn, Antwerpen, Athens and other European cities, the quartet will perform music by Teisutis Makačinas, Faustas Latėnas, and, of course, by their namesake Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis.

The Baltic Guitar Quartet play everything, from Bach and Rossini to contemporary rock and Balkan folk. Famous Lithuanian composers like Giedrius Kuprevičius have actually written music specially for them. Appearing in Vienna and Tallinn, they will bring joy to your ears with pieces by Piazzola, Bizet and Rossini, as well as by one of the quartet members, Chris Ruebens.

Sea in the Forest Project in Moldova
4 July | National Museum of Archaeology and History of Moldova, Chisinau (MD)
Performers
Petras Geniušas, piano; Liudas Mockūnas, saxophone
Mikalojus Konstantinas Čiurlionis is probably the most famous name in Lithuanian cultural history. Among his numerous achievements are his symphonic poems, written in the romantic tradition. The Sea and The Forest have been played and replayed by Lithuanians, so that almost everyone knows them by heart. However, Petras Geniušas, one of the most talented and ingenious Lithuanian pianists, along with the saxophonist Liudas Mockūnas, have come up with a wild idea that just seems to work: turn these classical pieces into jazz improvisations.

Yiddish culture was an important part of Lithuanian life before the Second World War. Seventy years ago, as in many other cities in Europe, the Vilnius ghetto was liquidated. To commemorate the lost culture and its people, four musicians have developed the project ‘Malda’ (the Lithuanian word for ‘prayer’), in which old songs in Yiddish and Hebrew are reborn in a modern half-classical, half-jazzy style.

Lithuanians are good at jazz, and they have been good at it for quite a while. The various venues of the Birmingham International Jazz and Blues Festival will see the freshest and most radical developments of our jazz tradition. Sheep Got Waxed are three jazz students who have spent some time playing together and have developed a unique improvisational approach to the music they make: weird and entrancing. Giedrė Kilčiauskienė has done her share of experimenting too, from electro-punk to pop and folk. Now she appears with the pianist Andrej Polevikov, who contributes greatly to her sweet voice and its infinite possibilities.

Neda Malūnavičiūtė has probably been the strongest female presence on the Lithuanian jazz scene ever since her debut in 1988. The performers will travel around Europe, and the highlight of the season is the ‘Jazz Meets Heritage’ project, organised for the occasion of Lithuania’s Presidency, in which Lithuanian and Swedish songs will be interpreted in an unexpected way.

Lithuania’s Violeta Urmana is one of the greatest singers of our time, a well-known name in the world’s biggest opera houses where she has sung roles such as Aida, Tosca, Sieglinde and Isolde. In Brussels, she will perform a Wagnerian programme centred around the composer’s melancholic Wesendonck-Lieder. Wagner wrote these songs during his passionate relationship with Mathilde Wesendonck, the wife of his patron Otto Wesendonck. Mathilde was also Wagner’s muse while he was composing Die Walküre and Tristan und Isolde, an opera for which the songs were a preliminary study. Complementing Wagner’s compelling music is Richard Strauss’s symphonic poem Tod und Verklärung, performed by the National Philharmonic Society of Lithuania. With its rich orchestration and its romantic theme of the transfiguration of the soul, there are strong links between the Strauss work and Wagner’s Tristan. And let’s not forget that for a long time the ecstatic Liebestod from this opera was known as Isoldes Verklärung.

This year, Lithuania is represented by the Dainius Pulauskas Group – an internationally renowned ambassador of Lithuanian jazz. The key to the group’s success is the artistic excellence of its members, their unparalleled ensemble, and, of course, their music, a most idiosyncratic and vivid version of fusion. www.londonjazzfestival.org.uk
Sea in the Forest Project in Japan
20 November | Takanawa Concert Hall, Tokyo (JP)

Ąžuoliukas (meaning ‘little oak tree’) is probably the most famous children choir in Lithuania. It is also one of the oldest. Founded in 1959 by the famous chorus master Herman Perelstein, it has grown to become an important part of the Lithuanian music scene, and a true epitome of boyhood in Vilnius. Nowadays, its members, who usually join at the age of six or seven, often stay on well into manhood, and bring their sons along to sing with them. The present choirmaster, Vytautas Miškinis, came to sing with Ąžuoliukas at the age of seven, and, having fallen in love with both the music and the atmosphere, he has never left it. In spite of the young age of many of its members, the choir has a varied and complex repertoire, from Mozart, Handel and Webber, to Dvořák, Shostakovich and contemporary Lithuanian composers, such as Balsys and Kutavičius. It is loved by audiences for its versatility and its willingness to participate in all sorts of projects; but at the same time it performs very professionally.

Four cellists sit on the stage. In one hour, they will go through their entire register, but at different tempos, thus creating a polytemporal canon. Furthermore, each cello is recorded and then layered by electronic means, thus making every instrument the source of its own canon. The sound of four cellos is transformed into an orchestra of 400. And each player is shrouded in invisible tulle, on which light projections appear. Sometimes they swirl in small flakes like snow, and sometimes they turn to stone.
This is the experience of Sandglasses, created by Justė Janulytė, a young Lithuanian composer, along with her international team of video and electronic music artists, most notably the Italian Luca Scarzella, and performed by soloists of the Gaida ensemble. As the title suggests, the inspiration for the project was hourglasses, which can be of different durations and different capacities, like the tempos of the cellos, but which also have multiple symbolic and poetic associations that the composer sets out to explore in her music.

Lukas Geniušas, piano
Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra
Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Juozas Domarkas
It’s going to be a busy few months for the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. Not that that’s unusual: it’s the most important orchestra in Lithuania, participating in major musical events at home, and welcomed as a guest at concerts, festivals and competitions abroad. Led by its youthful and charismatic conductor Modestas Pitrėnas, it will appear in Brussels together with Violeta Urmana, whose soprano voice is the pride and joy of Lithuanian ears. Then the orchestra will accompany the European Piano Competition in Caen, and will finish the year on a bright note, playing with the young pianist Lukas Geniušas in Poland.
