Merope

Merope is a new group involving musicians from five European countries. They compose a unique synthesis of Lithuanian folklore and original compositions, as well as world, jazz and electronic instruments. Merope’s haunting melodies, textures of sound, subtle harmony and polyrhythm give life to a new ritual music of our modern time.
Their latest album 9 Days was created solely with solar power and recorded in the open lands of southern Spain.
In this group, Lithuania is represented by Indrė Jurgelevičiūtė, a singer and performer on kanklės (Baltic psaltery). She earned Master Degree in jazz vocal from the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. For a year she studied classical Indian music at the Rotterdam Conservatoire. Jean-Christophe Bonnafous (France) plays bansuri, Bert Cools (Belgium) – guitar and electronics, Marcello Windolph (Germany/Brazil) – double bass, and Miguel Hiroshi (Spain) – percussion.
