One of the most original voices in the Lithuanian pop music scene,
Jurga, this Saturday won the Baltic Music Contest, which is organized as part of the yearly Karlshamn Baltic Festival (Sweden). Jurga with her song
5th Season impressed both - jury and audience.
The Baltic Song Contest is the highlight of the festival and the hub around which all else revolves. The contest is filmed and broadcasted by the Polish TV2 and the satellite channel Polonia.
"We were not thinking of the victory, we came to a contest of pop songs, where both, performance of the song and our outfits were out of the context", Jurga said. Winning at the festival was unexpected and pleasant news, the more as she has won with her new song.
This year, Baltic Song Contest celebrated its 20-year anniversary. Lithuania was not among the top contenders, yet, when granting the award, the jury said that it was not difficult for them to make the decision this time – Jurga was considerably different from the other participants.
Each participant of the contest performed two songs with an orchestra. Jurga performed All I Have, the English version of her song Aukso pieva, and 5th Season, a song from her new album Instrukcija. Meanwhile on Saturday, each singer had to choose one song. "Although 5th Season is rather different from typical songs of the festival, we decided to perform this song", said Vaidas Stackevičius, the head of Jurga’s management company M.P.3. "Rehearsals showed that Jurga was performing the song better and better, and it was just perfect at the final concert".
Jurga started her solo career in 2005, having issued her debut album Aukso pieva together with the M.P.3 agency. The album brought Jurga all available awards in Lithuania.
Instrukcija, the second album of the singer, was released in April 2007. Two songs from the second album – Instrukcija and Renkuosi žemę – have become radio hits. Radio stations that play dance music have included Jurga’s winning song 5th Season into their play lists.
