Vytautas V. Barkauskas

Biography

Vytautas V. Barkauskas (b. 1961) studied the piano with Chaimas Potašinskas and music theory and composition with Osvaldas Balakauskas in 1967-79 at the M.K.Čiurlionis School of Art. He continued his composition studies with Prof. Vytautas Laurušas at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, from which he graduated in 1984. Since 1983 Vytautas V. Barkauskas has delivered lectures and produced radio programmes about the history and latest developments in the field of electronic music. In 1986 he was appointed concertmaster at the Russian Drama Theatre in Vilnius where he subsequently became musical director. In 1992 Vytautas V. Barkauskas was appointed Assistant Professor at the Lithuanian Academy of Music, and in 1997 he was appointed to the same position at the Vilnius Pedagogical University. In 1994 he participated in the international contemporary music courses at Rheinsberg Academy of Music. He spent the next year working at the electronic studio of the Kunstakademie in Berlin. In 2002 he became a doctoral student of educology at the Vilnius Pedagogical University.

His works have been performed both in Lithuania and elsewhere, including Latvia, Estonia, France, Italy, Spain, Scotland, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Russia and other countries.

Vytautas V. Barkauskas (b. 1961) does not restrict his creative horizon to any single musical trend, his musical ideas find their way in many forms of expression, including musique concrete, electronic, instrumental, vocal, and other kinds of music. Most of his acoustic and electro-acoustic compositions reveal their affinity to some narrative, plot-driven varieties, tone of the narative is usually dramatic, reaching intense climaxes. The composer also writes incidental music.
