Snieguolė Dikčiūtė

Biography

Snieguolė Dikčiūtė (b.1966) began her formal musical education at the M.K.Čiurlionis Gymnasium of Arts, where she studied violin (1976-82). Later on she went to study composition at the Vilnius Conservatory (1982-86) and then at the Lithuanian Academy of Music with Osvaldas Balakauskas (1986-92). From 1991 to 1992 she continued her studies in computer music at the IRCAM with Magnus Lindberg and Marco Stroppa as well as oriental music cultures at the international workshops for composers in Kazimierz Dolny (Poland) with Witold Lutosławski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Robert Aitken, Bhaskar Chandaskar, Yi Chen, Loong-Hsing Wen and others. Her music has been performed at various Lithuanian new music festivals such as "Gaida" (1991, 1994, 1996, 2001, 2003), "Jauna muzika", Festivals of Music Action and Youth Chamber Music Days in Druskininkai.

In her works, Snieguolė Dikčiūtė displays an evocative blend of constructive elements (those based on numerical symbolism and the like) and figurative language of metaphors. The composer is keen on writing music for unconventional combinations of instruments, both electronic and acoustic, and synthesizing of different art forms such as visual media, acting and theatre. To achieve this, she often collaborated with jazz musicians, visual and video artists, actors and theatre directors. Her recent activities include music therapy and involvement of handicapped children into the process of music-making.
