Premiere:
10 November 2010, at the Juozas Gruodis Conservatory, Kaunas (Iš Arti Festival); performed by the Lithuanian Oboe Quintet: Robertas Beinaris (oboe), Tomas Bieliauskas (oboe), Laura Kasinskaitė (oboe d'amore), Petras Kuraitis (English horn), Arūnas Zujus (bassoon).
Programme note:
As the title IMPRO suggests, this piece gives an impression of quasi-improvised music through the use of certain aleatory elements that help loosen the vertical alignment of individual instrumental parts. My intention here was to evoke a feeling of music that would flash like shooting stars in the dead of night in August; that would drift like a light breeze; that would chirp like birds in the lake overgrown with reed; that would spill like a vagrant ground fog in the early autumn evening. To evoke this nature-inspired imagery five reed players also produce a variety of percussion sounds, playing on wind chimes, triangle, flexatone, rainstick, raganella, and reed mouthpieces. The form is based on the dynamic interchange between solo and ensemble episodes, in which spatial distribution of individual voices plays an important role. The bassoonist is placed in the middle, manipulating most of the percussion instruments, while the other four players are distributed in the four corners of the stage or hall, depending on the size of the performance space.
