Ramūnas Motiekaitis
Insect Steps

Year of Composition:  2011
Duration:  10
Instrumentation:  2222-2220-4perc-harp-pf-str

Commissioned by the Gaida Festival 2011

Premiere:

21 October 2011, at the Vilnius Congress Hall (Gaida Festival); performers: Lithuanian State Symphony Orchestra, conductor Mārtiņš Ozoliņš.

Programme note:

This music is static, as everything repeats while not being the same. This piece is the most decorative of all I have written thus far, or at least it seems so. The high-perched orchestra hums, as sounds move in twos or fours, resembling two wings and four legs that many insects have. This building of symmetric time is like a monument for those who were caught by birds or crushed all over during summer. I borrowed the title for this composition, though grudgingly, from the Latvian poet, Uldis Bērziņš. After all, everything what has been said here is not true. It is not a lie either.
