Programme Note
June Music 1981 for violin and cello (1981, 5 movements: Sky, Sea, Rain, Night, Earth) – the only of my works with such definite and simple history of origination that I still can recreate it easily after many years. At that time I was working in Klaipėda and was spending much of my time as a passenger of buses, trains, sometimes airplanes. It was a foggy, rainy day of early summer of 1981 when I travelled from Vilnius to Klaipėda by bus, reading Japanese poetry and looking at the monotonous landscape unchanging for a few years…
When I finally got off the bus in Klaipėda I brought there something that I didn’t take with me, something that I didn’t even imagine in the beginning of this route. It was the June Music 1981, with its form, titles of the movements and details of music. Of course, writing it down took more time, nevertheless this is the work of instantaneous inspiration. The work is dedicated to the performers of it, the violinist Audronė Vainiūnaitė and the cellist Augustinas Vasiliauskas.
